Did you know that reducing emissions from the idling engine in cars and trucks is an important concern for the air quality?
In fact, some states now have laws prohibiting vehicles of all kinds from idling for more than 3 minutes. Of course, there are exceptions made for certain weather extremes and health-related conditions.
So what’s the bid deal you ask.
FACT: Idling autos and trucks cause air pollution.
An idling vehicle emits twenty times more pollution than one traveling at 30 mph. AND every gallon of gas burned produces more than 20 lbs of greenhouse gases.
FACT: Idling engines are unhealthy.
Children are more sensitive to air pollution because they breath 50% more air per pound of body weight than adults.
FACT: Idling wastes money.
Ten seconds of idling uses more fuel than turning off your engine and restarting it. And idling your vehicle’s engine for ten minutes uses twice as much fuel as it takes to travel five miles!
HOW CAN I HELP?
By doing some or all of the following, you can make a difference AND save money:
- Drive your vehicle to warm it up and turn it off when waiting to pick up your children at school, sports, etc.
- Don’t use remote starters.
- Notify drivers of service vehicles at your home to turn off their car or truck.
